Permanent Research Scientist position in GW instrumentation at UCLouvain

Jan 10, 2024

Permanent position in gravitational-wave instrumentation is now open for applications at the University of Louvain (UCLouvain), Belgium as Research Scientist (100% research; no teaching, unless desired); Profile: instrumentation for gravitational-wave detectors. Deadline for applications: 13 February 2024. The selected candidate will have budget for hiring one postdoctoral researcher for 3 years plus additional budget for scientific personnel. Moreover, the UCLouvain GW group has also introduced an important funding request for equipping a new extension of the laser & optics technological platform of UCLouvain, where part of the current instrumentation activity of the group takes place (the outcome of this request is expected in the coming months).

Information on the GW group at UCLouvain

permanent staff full-time on GW science:
Prof. G. Bruno,
NN (professor position - in the process of being filled),
NN (research scientist position – this opening).

Permanent staff part-time on GW projects:
Prof. C. Lauzin (lasers and optics)
Dr A. Tanasijczuk (computing, chair of the ET software and framework division)
Dr C. Arina (research project coordination; ET-PP WP chair “Financial architecture”)
Prof. G. de Wasseige (neutrino astronomy IceCube and KM3NeT; joint project on GW-neutrino coincident search)
Prof L. Jacques (signal treatment data analysis, machine learning)
Prof C. Ringeval (theory/cosmology)
New collaborations expected with the Royal Observatory of Belgium once the professor position is filled.

In addition, the UCLouvain GW group currently counts 3 postdocs and 5 PhD students fully on GW projects.

Local experimental facilities used by the GW group to conduct research:
Laser & optics technological platform. A further extension of this platform, dedicated to GW research, is foreseen in the near future pending positive outcome of an important funding request
Computing cluster (4500 cores, 2.5 PB storage, GPUs) serving data analysis for CMS, NA62, LVK, ET, IceCube KM3NeT, theory and cosmology projects
Mechanical workshop (>500 m^2), including design office.
Electronics lab

This GW group is integrated within the Research Institute in Mathematics and Physics (IRMP, 150 members) of UCLouvain and more in particular in the CP3 and CURL centers (80 members altogether, conducting research in experimental and theoretical physics of the fundamental interactions, cosmology, astrophysics, and technological spin-offs). The UCLouvain GW group currently conducts research on instrumentation for GW detectors (Virgo and ET) not only with its local facilities indicated above, but also at the E-TEST and ETpathfinder facilities funded by the EU through its Interreg Europe programme.E-TEST and ETpathfinder are located at the Centre Spatial de Liège and in Maastricht, respectively, which are very close to the UCLouvain campus in Louvain-la-Neuve.

The UCLouvain campus is located some 25 km south of Brussels, to which it is conveniently connected by public transport, thus allowing life either in the EU capital or in the pleasant green countryside environment surrounding the campus. UCLouvain offers a number of advantages to its personnel, including reimbursement of public transport season tickets between home and work place and free language courses. More information about life in Belgium and at UCLouvain is available here.
